Kennywood Visitors May Run Into Traffic Jams

A routine drive to Kennywood might be anything but a walk in the park this season.

Major construction projects on Route 837 and the Rankin Bridge may trigger major traffic jams for Kennywood guests when the park opens on Saturday.

"This is definitely the time of year for construction, but we're taking a pro-active approach to help our guests get here with as little stress as possible," said park spokesman Jeff Filicko.

The long-term rehabilitation of the Rankin Bridge effectively funnels traffic from the Parkway East to a single lane heading towards Route 837 in Whitaker.

Filicko says traffic heading from downtown Pittsburgh can easily access the Homestead-Grays Bridge as a detour, as well as the stretch of Route 837 through the South Side.

Drivers coming from the North Hills and points beyond are being urged to use the Turnpike, exit at the Pittsburgh/Monroeville interchange, follow Route 48 to Route 30 in North Versailles, Route 148 in McKeesport and use the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge to reach Route 837 and the park's entrance.

As workers spent the day painting, scrubbing and sweeping in advance of Saturday's opening, Filicko stressed that the park has been working with local police to help keep traffic moving nearby.

"We're also doing our best to meet with the contractors in the bordering municipalities to alleviate stress on both sides and find the easiest and quickest way to get guests from the starting point to our Kennywood parking lot."

Toad the Wet Sprocket

WHAT’S UP: Toad the Wet Sprocket concert.

Time: 8 p.m. Saturday.

Place: Carnegie Library Music Hall, Munhall.

Tickets: $30 in advance; $32 at the door.

Information: www.ticketmaster.com.

MUNHALL
— They’re done lamenting their name.

Today, the four members of Toad the Wet Sprocket believe their band name is perfectly useful.

“We did not think that name would last originally, and for awhile it was a regrettable decision, but now it looks like one of the most forward-thinking ideas ever,” said Dean Dinning, bassist, keyboardist and backing vocalist for Toad the Wet Sprocket, the ’90s alt-rock hitmakers who launch their tour Saturday at Carnegie Library Music Hall in Munhall.

“That name gets us more free publicity,” Dinning said, recalling a visit to Yahoo.com where he discovered Toad the Wet Sprocket’s photo, even though the band hadn’t done anything new.

“At least once a year, some magazine or Web site does a list of the worst band names in history and we’re normally No. 1,” Dinning said. “Although last year we were No. 2 behind Hoobastank, which was kind of upsetting, but I guess you’ve got to make way for the new guard.”

Names don’t matter much — Billy Shakespeare said that — though art is timeless, as evidenced in Toad the Wet Sprocket’s catchy canon that yielded three Top-40 hits and a fourth Hot Mainstream radio smash.

If you listened to rock radio in the ’90s you remember the bittersweet ballad “Walk on the Ocean,” the revved up “Fall Down,” the soaring chorus of “All I Want” and the simplistic and jaunty “Good Intentions.”

Singer Glen Phillips penned “Walk on the Ocean” after vacationing on a pristine island near Seattle then returning home to southern California.

“That’s why you’ll hear those lines like, ‘We spotted the ocean/At the end of the trail,’ and ‘Back at the homestead, where the air makes you choke/People don’t know you, trust is a joke,’” Dinning said, swiftly singing the first and last verses from that 1991 hit.

Dinning and guitarist Todd Nichols were in college when they co-wrote “Fall Down”.

“We were really into Neil Young at the time, which is why that song sounds like ‘Ohio,’” Dinning said, referring to a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young protest song.

Dinning was delighted when “Fall Down” turned up prominently in an episode of ABC’s “My So-Called Life.” Recalled Dinning: “there was no cooler show at the time.”

Dinning, Nichols, Phillips and drummer Randy Guss formed Toad the Wet Sprocket in 1986 while at San Marcos High School near Santa Barbara. They plucked their band’s name from a punchline used in a skit by Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

And while the original four bandmates are still together, they weren’t asked to play at their class’ 20-year reunion.

“I don’t think we were in the budget,” Dinning said.

On tour, Toad the Wet Sprocket has added a fifth member, Johnny Hawthorne, who plays lap steel, mandolin and guitar.

“He’s adding a really great color to our live sets,” Dinning said.

Toad the Wet Sprocket picked Pittsburgh for its tour opener “because we’ve really had good experiences in Pittsburgh,” Dinning said. “Pennsylvania and Ohio were always good states for Toad even before we got big.”

In 1994, they played for a sold-out crowd of about 24,000 at Star Lake Amphitheatre in Burgettstown. It helped having Rusted Root as the support act, right after that Pittsburgh band had exploded onto the scene. Toad the Wet Sprocket graciously let the hometown heroes take the stage last that night.

“We were glad to have them on tour with us,” Dinning said.

Saturday’s show will be opened by Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers of Massachusetts.

Waterpark bids bye to longtime manager

Sandcastle Waterpark’s new general manager Damian Dondero, left, looks over the park from the boardwalk with exiting general manager Scott MacKay Wednesday afternoon. (Cindy Shegan Keeley)

A longtime general manager at Sandcastle Waterpark is riding his last wave at the West Homestead facility to continue a family business, and a North Carolina man has been selected to take his place.

Scott MacKay, formerly of Forest Hills and now a South Hills resident, has spent the last 20 years making Sandcastle Waterpark what it is today.

MacKay started his aquatic career as a lifeguard at Forest Hills Pool, worked in maintenance there, and worked for Kennywood Entertainment LLC as an operations manager during Sandcastle's construction in 1988 and its opening in July 1989. It opened later than projected because of flooding.

"When (Sandcastle) first (was) built, we were sort of modeled after Kennywood (with) the operating schedule and so forth," he said. "What we found over time was you couldn't operate the water park the same way as you operated the amusement park. When the sun went down, it was too cold to swim so we had to try to find other things to extend the operating time we were here."

Under his watch, the water park added Club Wet, which is now known as Sandbar. Dunkin' the water-breathing dragon was named Sandcastle's mascot. And Stacks, a snack bar with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a made-to-order sandwich station, and more were added.

MacKay said Sandcastle has had a tremendous impact on his life, and he has been able to build friendships with various team members through the years, some of whom started out in the earlier years and have come back with their families.

"We're just starting to see the history that we've been a part of and the memories," he said, "and I think that's going to be what I remember the most when I leave this job."

Steelers keep Batch as backup

A day after Byron Leftwich's departure, the Pittsburgh Steelers moved quickly to retain Charlie Batch.

Batch agreed to a one-year, $895,000 deal, according to a source, including a $50,000 signing bonus.

Batch, 34, is entering his 11th season, his seventh with the Steelers. A native of Pittsburgh, Batch joined the Steelers in 2002 and has played in 22 games, including four starts.

His first four seasons were with the Detroit Lions, where he was a starter most of his time.

Batch suffered a broken clavicle last August, forcing him to spend the season on the injured reserve list. That created the opening for Leftwich to join the team as the backup.

The Steelers would have liked to have Leftwich and Batch back, but they figured Leftwich would find a different team.

Leftwich signed a two-year, $7.5 million deal Monday with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Boys' Coach of the year: Gary Goga

In four seasons, Gary Goga went from having the worst team in his section to having the best in WPIAL Class AAAA.

Goga guided Peters Township to a 23-3 record this season and the first WPIAL basketball title in school history. This was Goga's fourth season as the Indians' coach, and his turnaround job is impressive. Peters Township was 7-17 in his first year, finishing last in the section. The Indians were 6-18 in his second year.

Things started to turn last year, and the Indians reached the WPIAL summit this season.

Goga, 33, is a graduate of Bethel Park and played at Pitt-Bradford. He is a 12th-grade English teacher at Steel Valley.

Biggest key to the season: I think just at different times of the season, we always had somebody step up. So many times when we needed a lift, there was always someone to provide that lift, and in more ways than just scoring.

You teach at Steel Valley and coach at Peters Township. Is that hard? Not at all. I love both places. It's easy. I enjoy the drives to both places. I get to listen to ESPN radio.

Two coaches that you admire at any level? From a collegiate standpoint, I really like Jamie Dixon at Pitt. One of the reasons is because Pitt is my favorite team, but I just like the way they play. The others would probably be Danny Holzer [at Upper St. Clair] and Johnny Lee when he was at Baldwin. Those are the guys I coached under and learned under.

If you won a million dollars, what would you buy first? I would make my classroom the greatest of all time. I'd add a second level and put a basketball hoop there. I'd have recliners all over, too.

What advice would you give sports parents: Let the coaches coach, and encourage your kids to work hard because nothing should be handed to them.

People might be surprised to know that you ... I have 97 bobbleheads. I collect them in all different sports.

Good Luck Scott MacKay!!!!

Friday, April 17th will be Scott MacKay's last day at Sandcastle. After twenty years Scott has decided to move on to other endeavors.

Scott has made Sandcastle what it is today.

The site where Sandcastle currently sits was formerly a railroad yard for U.S. Steel.

In 1988, Kennywood Entertainment bought the land and began construction on the park. Sandcastle officially opened for business in July 1989. The park was originally supposed to be called Splashdown, however park executives decided on Sandcastle.

Good Luck Scott!!

“Meet Bruce Springsteen”

Auction To Benefit Rainbow Kitchen Community Services

Bruce Springsteen has offered Rainbow Kitchen an extraordinary fundraising opportunity, with the donation of a “meet & greet” package to be auctioned for his sold-out Mellon Arena concert on May 19th.

Bruce has agreed to personally meet with the auction winner for a bid of at least $10,000 for the package of four premium tickets and four E Street Lounge passes. He will also match the winning bid with a personal donation to Rainbow Kitchen of up to $50,000.

Bruce Springsteen has been a friend and supporter of Rainbow Kitchen Community Services for many years, and he encourages his fans to contribute to Rainbow Kitchen as well. Bruce made this fantastic offer to Rainbow Kitchen to help us raise as much money as possible through the auction, and we look forward to telling him that his Pittsburgh fans have once again made this effort a huge success. Please note the stipulation that this is intended to be a locally-based fundraising effort with a local winner.

Details About the Prize Package

Meet Bruce Springsteen - For a winning bid of $10,000 or more, the winning bidder will meet Bruce Springsteen backstage before the concert. (And when you meet him, we hope you’ll be able to tell him that you bid at least $50,000 because you wanted to ensure that Rainbow Kitchen would receive the greatest possible benefit from his generous offer!) If the highest bid submitted is below $10,000, the winning bidder will receive the four tickets and four E Street Lounge passes, but will not have the opportunity to meet Bruce Springsteen.

Four Premium Tickets - The seats are located in the loge section (first tier above the floor) within the first five rows, either to the left or right of the stage. The winning bidder may choose instead to receive passes to the General Admission/standing room area directly in front of the stage.

Four E Street Lounge Passes - The E Street Lounge passes will enable the auction winner to go backstage to relax and have a drink (cash bar) before the show.

Steel Valley Sets Sail With 'Anything Goes'

Being a member of the pit orchestra is typically a pretty thankless job. It's time consuming, you're actually hidden from view while performing, and no one ever notices unless something goes horribly wrong. Steel Valley takes things to the next level. Orchestra members are not even named in the program. Now that's cold. And unfortunate because the orchestra actually sounds pretty good with a very challenging Cole Porter score despite looking like week fifteen in a Survivor: Steel Valley Pit Orchestra reality show.

This show is highlighted by a host of excellent performances. First and foremost, Katie Marcinko as unappreciated night club singer Reno Sweeney. Ms. Marcinko has a truly lovely voice, easily one of the best heard this season. Although her voice may be better suited to operatic pieces than the jazzy score, she does a wonderful job and carries the show vocally.

While no one in this cast approaches Ms. Marcinko's vocal ability, Steel Valley has a host of very gifted actors. Often a high school production relies on two or perhaps three actors comfortable on stage and with their characters. Based strictly on acting ability, this cast compares with the very best. Credit Director Michael Altman for excellent casting and helping these young men and women find their characters and become comfortable in their skin.

Ryan Brennan (Moonface Martin) brings energy to spare. He makes everyone on stage with him better. Bridget Shields is well cast as Emma, his detractor. Her light scorn and disgust with Moonface's antics serve to put a spotlight on them. Te Shon Farr (Mrs. Harcourt) and Zach Miller (Evelyn Oakleigh) satirize upper class mannerisms and accents to very good effect.

Liz Lengyel (Hope Harcourt) and Cory Davis (Billy Crocker) are the romantic leads in a show that really is at its finest when it's not being romantic, but both perform very well indeed.

The set is well constructed. The ocean liner setting requires a very elaborate multi-tiered set that looks good although it doesn't reach the level of some bigger budgeted high schools. The audio, however, is very well done.

Sorority Row - In Theaters October 2, 2009

Filmed in the Steel Valley in Munhall.

Releasing on October 2, 2009, Sorority Row tells the story of when five sorority girls inadvertently cause the murder of one of their sisters in a prank that went horribly wrong, they all agree to keep the matter to themselves and to never speak of it again, so they can get on with their lives. This proves easier said than done, when after graduation a mysterious killer goes after the five girls and anyone who knows their secret.

Sorority Row
stars Briana Evigan, Leah Pipes, Rumer Willis, Jamie Chung, Audrina Patridge, Margo Harshman, and Carrie Fisher.

The film was directed by Stewart Hendler and written by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger and is based on the original screenplay entitled Seven Sisters by Mark Rosman which was developed into the classic 1983 horror film The House on Sorority Row.
